3s display Cantabs depth at Shelford

Cantabs 3s

Being a small club, we have sometimes struggled over the years to put out 3 teams on a reguilar basis, however this season has seen a continued rise in the number of players within the Cantabs camp. Its a testiment to the current coaching setup and tight social atmosphere throughout the teams that our 1st, 2nd and 3rd squads are continuing to compete in their respective leagues.

This weeks 3's squad was looking strong, with Pete Collins in back row returning from half a season out injured, Alex BJ able to play thanks to a weekend off school rugby and Pedro making his second appearance for the 3s and for the club.

The first half of the game was a tough battle. Shelford were kicking well to pin us back, scrummaging hard and forcing us to defend our line hard on several occasions. 15 minutes in, we scored our first try through the backs and right under the posts allowing for an easy conversion. Shelford continued to batter us with their big runners, as we anticpated they would. thankfully our defence held, and we started to realise that the way to win this game was to move the ball out into space. Fergus, Alex and Pedro, all training together this week, were in sync with each other, making ground and moving the ball into space for the wingers. Second try of the game went to Alan, who was making his debut for the club and playing his first game of rugby in 10 years - this guy is FAST. By half time we had made our way over the Shelford line 4 times and the score was 22-0.

As the second half got underway, it became apparent that our guys were fitter and a little better drilled than the opposition. Our pack began to regain some control of the Shelford scrum, disrupt rucks and move the ball about themselves. We continued to score throughout the half. Despite Shelfords efforts to stop up coming through, Cantabs 3s were passing the ball about with skill and intent. By the end of the game, the final score was 82-0.

The threes played with real spirit, and there were a few standout performances. Skipper Tim Fitz puts his body on the line every week and always gives 100% - this week scoring 1 try and making some great runs. Pete Collins had a storming return to the game, tackling all over the park and playing intelligently. Ash Shaw commanded the game really well from fullback. Debutant Alan proved himself and scored 2 tries. Fergus has slotted into the no. 10 role naturally, and had to get the jug in this week. Tozer slotted a couple of impressive drop-goal conversions and Pedro looks like he could be a really handy player for the club. Man of the match this week goes to Tom Heaver, who played an absolute blinder, scoring two great tries and playing well for 80 minutes.
