Cantabrigian Rugby Football Club

Defensive naivety cost Cantabrigian dear as they lost 33-17 to Thetford.

Cantabs had trailed 25-5 at half time, but they fought back in the second half, and their try-scorers were Francois Eve, who also kicked a conversion, and Tim Fitz, who scored two.

Vice-captain Chris Walliker said: "I think we played the better rugby but defensively I think we were a bit naïve.

"We were quite pleased with the way we played, we just need to shore a few things up in defence. We were very pleased with our attacking play as there was a lot of quick ball and off-loading. They had a big kicking game and we were not ready for that at the beginning.

"Once we got our head round that, it was much more of a contest. The scoreline is a bit flattering for them, they probably just edged it."

Just a Special mention to Tim Fitzmaurice, who has at long last achieved his life long ambition of scoring a try for each of the five cantabs sides over his long cantabs career!

NEW COACH!

Cantabs would like to announce the appointment of the new club/playing coach, Jamie Traxon, more info on Jamie to follow soon..

Captains Letter

Dear all,
As the new Captain of Cantabs for this year I am writing to all the players old and new to outline what I think Cantabs can achieve this year and build on the season we had last year.
As you might know I have been with Cantabs since the middle of last season and although I know a lot of you before I played I was pleased to see the team spirit and friendliness of the club is still very much alive, something we need to keep going and build as a club. This is something I value highly and one of the main reasons why I have chosen to become more involved in the club, taking up the Captain role. The other reason is that I fear that we have lost our direction on and off the pitch, which is a challenge I think we can all meet by playing the kind of rugby we all enjoy on the pitch and keep the traditions of rugby clubs off the pitch. Together with my Vice Captain, Chris Walliker, we plan to steer Cantabs towards a more professional attitude without losing the characteristics that make the club what it is.
Several meetings with the committee and a number of players over the summer have brought in the various opinions regarding the direction we want the club to go in and the necessary changes we have to implement. The first step has been the arrival of a new coach in  Jamie Traxon  at the helm. I think we all recognise some of the failings last year, both in the coaching but also in the playing front which is one of the main objectives we need to overcome.
We have had lengthy talks with Jamie about the style of rugby we want to play and I believe we now have a coach who has both the ability to train and shape the players  and develop all teams towards more league success.
With the 1st  &  2nd  teams having captains, all players together form the building blocks of a squad with the same moves throughout the club. Everybody should therefore come to training Tuesdays and Thursdays and learn together to lay down foundations for the season as well as working on fitness. However we all recognise that people have jobs and home commitments, and as such if you can only make one of the training sessions you will get a lot more out of it than simply turning up on a Saturday
Training will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 7.30pm so please make sure you arrive at 7pm to be warmed up and ready for the 7.30pm start. Training will be more structured and hopefully everyone will have an understanding not only of what we are doing but more importantly why we are doing it and how it will improve our game.
I know you all, like me, are looking forward to that first game be it the first carry of the ball or the first bone shattering tackle. I know if we train hard over the season and all try to improve our games every team will have a great and successful season.

Warren Cowan         1st team Captain

Dear Cantab,

May I take this opportunity to welcome you as a new member of the Cantabrigian Rugby
Club (Cantabs).

Established back in 1946, Cantabs is renowned throughout East Anglia for its glowing fires, warm hospitality and friendship.

The Rugby Club was originally formed by members of the Cambridge High School for Boys when their school days had ended.  The School has since been turned into the Hills Road Six Form College, however, links with the school still remain to this day.

I trust you enjoy your time as a member and that you help spread the good name of
Cantabs Rugby Club that has been upstanding for the past 60 plus years.

The Club is in good health and good hands. We have an Annual Dinner and a Summer Ball for you to look forward to at the end of each season. And as a member you have the opportunity to use the Clubhouse facilities for a private function subject to availability.

Cantabs survival is due to a lot of hard work and sponsorship from individuals you may never know and we hope you will enjoy your time here with us you will want to be involved in the running of the club.  Also, should you know anybody who is willing to give some time to helping out, please put them in contact with myself or any committee members listed on the contact sheet.

Be proud to be a member of CANTABRIGIAN RUGBY CLUB and respect everybody both on and off the field.

Allen Sadler
Club President
