A late try from West Norfolk put paid to Cantabrigian, who lost 11-6 in Eastern Counties One.

The hosts had the lead at the break after two penalties from James Setchell, but they were brought level by a kick from West Norfolk before falling to a late touchdown.

Skipper Shane Tovill said: "Up to the beginning of the second half, we were on top and throughout the game they didn't really look like scoring.

"We've been throwing it away a lot this season. I don't think it's a fitness thing, I think it's a mental thing."

He added: "It's very disappointing as in the first half we had a brilliant mindset and everything was going well."

Setchell boot saves day for Tovill's boys

CANTABS could not turn dominance into points and were held to a 6-6 draw at home by Fakenham in Eastern Counties Division One.

Two penalties from James Setchell were all they had to show for controlling the game as their efforts were matched where it mattered by Fakenham.

Skipper Shane Tovill said: "It was a tight game. We were encamped in their half for the whole of the second period.

"We were in their 22, scrummaging on their five-metre line, getting line-outs on their 10 but we seemed to stutter. We couldn't get over the try-line and had one chance but knocked on.

"It was in our hands, but we threw it away. They never looked like winning. All the people watching said it was very frustrating."

Shane Tovill is remaining optimistic!!

Shane Tovill is remaining optimistic despite Cantabs' disappointing 34-0 defeat to West Norfolk in Eastern Counties One.

The skipper was forced to play lock Justin Stanbridge at prop after a late withdrawal, and Tovill was full of praise for his usual partner in the second row.

"He had an awesome game and played really well, taking a lot of hard knocks," said Tovill.

But they still fell to their third defeat of the season, although Tovill cites lack of first-team availability as the problem.

"I'm still happy with the progress the team is making, I'm just not happy with the results," he said.

"I don't think I've had my full first team out yet, so I'm not worrying, and it's still a new league to us."

Division One

CANTABS got their season up and running by beating Lowestoft & Yarmouth by a point for their first win of the campaign.

Joshua Railton got Cantabs' first try, diving off the back of the scrum following a forwards' drive, and Barnaby Rix increased the lead with a touchdown between the posts, which was converted by James Setchell.

James Thomas got the third try, which was again converted by Setchell, but they were forced to dig deep when Lloyd-Beavis was sin-binned in the closing stages of the match.

Captain Shane Tovill said: "It was a good performance. The backs performed very well and the forwards held their own. The last 10 minutes we were really on the back foot."

We threw it away, fumes angry Tovill

DIVISION ONE

CANTABS were their own worst enemies in a disappointing home defeat.

James Setchell scored all their points - a converted try and two penalties - but their opponents struck with one soft touchdown from a quick penalty to win the game in the second half.

And captain Shane Tovill was left to rue what might have been.

"It was a close game," he said. "I think we lost it ourselves, I don't think they beat us. We threw the game away.

"It was just that last touch which we now need to nail down. We didn't score when we had the opportunity."
